Gaborone United (GU) chairperson, Boitumelo ‘Breakdown’ Nsunge, will vacate his position on Saturday as the club heads for an elective Annual General Meeting (AGM) to be held at the IHS Multi-Purpose Hall.

Nsunge will not seek re-election and exits a seat he has occupied since 2018. Speaking to MmegiSport this week, Nsunge said he is taking a break from administrative duties. He believes his term is amongst the best in the club’s 58-year history. “It was the best. It is an honest fact, my reign was one of the best GU ever had. Remember during my term, GU won the FA Cup three times and the league once. This was one of the most successful periods we have had as a club and I believe I, alongside the committee that I was elected with, have done a stellar job,” Nsunge said.

Under Nsunge’s leadership, the club managed to reconcile with club investor and president, Nicholas Zakhem in 2018 following the 2016 fallout. GU were also at their best on the pitch as the team won the Orange FA Cup on three occasions and capped the success with a first league title in 13 years, winning the domestic crown in 2022. The Reds were set to assemble for the AGM at the start of the season but the meeting was postponed as members failed to form a quorum.

MmegiSport has been informed that the meeting will go ahead even if the gathering fails to form a quorum. Seven positions including that of chairperson, vice chairperson, secretary-general, vice secretary-general, treasurer, and two additional members, are up for grabs over the weekend. Over 200 delegates are expected to cast their vote tomorrow as per the club’s revised constitution and Nsunge has advice for the incoming executive committee. “Leadership is a very daunting but (also) easy task. You need to have a solid plan that is to be followed by implementation and if you tick these two aspects, you are not bound to fail." The Reds had not released the list of contestants at press time, but sources said the former club’s public relations officer, Ernest Mosedame, is amongst those in contention for the chairperson's position.

Morwaeng’s rants: Leaders must listen

Kabo Morwaeng, a senior BDP figure known for always defending the President and also sent to do some shocking stuff in his capacity as a Minister, has defended the former Cabinet against claims it failed to advise ex-president Mokgweetsi Masisi, contributing to the party’s defeat. While he insists Cabinet discussions are “secret” and that the President holds “enormous power,” his defence misses a crucial point: Batswana deserve leaders...
