Mares' defender, Lone Gaofetoge, is said to be inching closer to a move to a so far unmanned club in Turkey.

Gaofetoge recently parted ways with Gaborone United (GU) upon the conclusion of her two-year contract with the club. She joined GU from Zambian side, Elite Ladies FC (formerly called Lusaka Dynamos Ladies. Since her arrival, the hard tackling defender has been an integral part of the Red Roses' squad. "She has bid farewell to the team, coaches and players. She just told the management that she is will not be renewing her contract with the club and she will be moving to a club in Turkey soon," an informer told this publication. Gaofetoge was part of the team that won the Positive Changes Cup in 2022 while she recently helped GU win their maiden DTCB Women's Championship.

"Today marks the end of the road with Gaborone United, it has been 2 (two) incredible seasons; it was never easy to say goodbye especially with those unforgettable memories I had but I am comfortable (sic) by the knowledge that our paths may cross again, not now but maybe tomorrow. I will forever cherish the victories we shared together and the defeats that built our character," part of post on Gaofetoge's Facebook page on Thursday reads. The Red Roses will be actively involved in the market for a replacement as the team is readying for its debut in the CAF Champions League COSAFA qualifiers to be played in Malawi, from August 15-24, 2024.

GU have been pitted in Group B alongside fellow qualifiers' debutants, Uniao Desportiva de Lichinga of Mozambique and Malawi's Ascent Academy while Young Buffaloes of Eswatini make a return for the second time. Meanwhile, another Mares' player, Thanda Mokgabo, has found a new home in Zambia. The midfielder-cum-defender has left Yasa Queens and joined Zambian champions, Green Buffaloes, on a six-month contract. She turned down an offer from Namibian champions, Ongos FC and opted for a stay in Zambia. She had an excellent season with Yasa as she had 17 goal contributions in 21 league games. She found the back of the net on 12 occasions and assisted five more goals. Mokgabo was the team's captain in the just ended season.
