National champions, Jwaneng Galaxy gave Batswana an early Independece day present when they eliminated Orlando Pirates to reach the group stages of the CAF Champions League.

The two sides had played to a 1-1 aggregate score and the local side prevailed in the penalty shootout. The game was played in South Africa. In the shootout, Galaxy managed to score all the five penalties while Pirates missed one.

They have now reached the group stages of the Champions League for the second time. The first to do so was Township Rollers when they were under the tutelage of Serbian mentor, Nikola Kavazovic.

Galaxy followed suit under the guidance, Morena Ramoreboli. The South African gaffer has done it again this year, proving once again that he is one of the best foreign coaches to work in Botswana. Under him, Galaxy have remained a stable side with consistent performances.

Meanwhile Gaborone United (GU) are out of the CAF Confederations cup after going down 3-0 against Supersport United in the second leg of the preliminary round on Friday night. The two sides had played to a 1-1 draw in the first leg played in Gaborone a fortnight ago. However the South African side progresses to the next round with a 4-1 aggregate score.

The Reds will now shift their focus to the league, which is scheduled to start next weekend.
