The Botswana Football League (BFL) will gather at the Aquarian Tide Hotel in Gaborone for its Annual General Meeting (AGM) where the proposed reduction of teams could take centre stage.

Earlier this year, the BFL CEO, Senzo Mbatha told journalists during a media engagement session that the league will be reduced from 16 to 12 teams in a phased manner. Under the proposal, four teams will be relegated at the end of the 2023-2024 season, while only two will be promoted. This means in the 2024-2025 season, the Botswana Premier League (BPL) will have 14 teams. Four teams will be relegated at the end of that season, with two promoted for the start of the 2025-2026 season, meaning the league will be down to 12. Yesterday, Mbatha told Mmegi Sport that the issue of reducing teams will be on the agenda as the 16 clubs meet.

The matter is expected to be a hot potato with some clubs opposed to the move. "Yes, the issue of the teams will be discussed because the regulations have to deal with the issue of promotion and relegation," Mbatha said. "There is no special agenda. It is a normal agenda; considering the financial statement and considering the report," he added. Additionally, he said there are some vacancies to be filled during the AGM. "There is also the filling of vacancies because there is a vacancy within the board after Mr (Kelesitse) Gilika resigned. So we need to replace him and there is also a vacancy created by some representation. There is also going to be the consideration of the new constitution, new rules and regulations. The clubs are also expected to discuss the start of the new season with no deal for a new title sponsor struck yet."
