The Botswana Football League (BFL) will proceed with its meeting in Palapye on Saturday despite a Botswana Football Association (BFA) decision to suspend the league body.

Following a meeting of its Emergency Committee last night, the BFA announced it was provisionally suspending the BFL with immediate effect. In a statement, the mother body said the suspension was due to gross violation of the BFA and BFL constitutions, in particular, suspending league matches. "The provisional suspension was prompted by the BFL's decision to suspend the Premier League and National First Division League of the BFL as it was in violation of Article 4.2 and 17.5.1 of the BFA constitution and Article 4.3 of the BFL constitution which obligates the BFL to run the league on behalf of the BFA," reads BFA's statement.

The BFA said the BFL had failed to heed the mother body's warning not to suspend matches as the league body had an obligation to comply with all its directives. "Going forward, the BFA administration will be working closely with the secretariat of the BFL to normalise the situation as quickly as possible," the BFA said. BFL's interim chairperson, Tebogo Sebego, this morning told Mmegi Sport that their scheduled Palapye meeting will proceed as planned. "The BFL is a company whose governing statutes include the Companies Act of Botswana. The Shareholders and directors are obliged to meet and discuss business of the company and further answer to the cases filed against them. They have an obligation to meet and map the way forward in light of the BFA position," Sebego said.
