Africa’s stadium dilemma: Being cruel in order to be kind

Africa’s football stadiums have come under scrutiny, with CAF’s requirements proving too steep for many nations that are forced to fly their teams outside their borders for ‘home’ matches. Since 2019, CAF has given its members a chance to get their facilities up to standard as the continent moves to ensure the provision of quality venues in line with international standards, but despite the ‘grace period’, some nations are still failing to deliver, writes MQONDISI DUBE

National teams and clubs participating in CAF competitions have become regular refugees in neighbouring or even far-flung countries, in their quest to find a home away from home.

The development was triggered by CAF’s decision in 2019 that requires the use of only facilities approved by the continent’s football governing body.
