Women's rugby coach worried over fitness

The women's rugby team coach, Shaun Lees, has said that his team which hosts the Confederation of African Rugby (CAR) South/East tournament at the end of this month, still lacks match fitness.

The team has only participated in one tournament, the CAR Castle Sevens, held in Zambia early this year. Lees said that he has since then slightly changed the team's game plan, which he now wants to put to practice. "The team is scheduled to take part in a tournament this weekend at Middleburg, South Africa, but there would still be a need for one more tournament thereafter," he said. Lees said the team has two rookies he is keen to put to test. He said the new comers might make the final squad if they prove themselves.

Meanwhile, the team donated foodstuffs to over 250 underprivileged children in Gaborone's Old Naledi shanty township, last weekend. The 13-member provisional team was earlier this year split into two teams for social work. The teams, Phoenix and Panthers, were tasked with coming up with ways of raising either funds and or food to donate to the children. Lees said apart from exercising their social responsibility, the activity was meant to raise awareness about the women's rugby team.  He said the exercise has strengthened relations among team members. "The team has learnt how to work together for a common cause, something that can benefit them on the field of play," he said.
