Whales, Lions seek rugby admission

Thebephatswa Desert Whales and Gantsi Hungry Lions will know before the end of the week if the Botswana Rugby Union (BRU) will admit them into the A Division League. BRU director, Andrew Paxinos said the two clubs have applied to be incorporated into the league, which starts on March 20.

The clubs are being assessed and a decision will be made before the end of the week. Paxinos said the two teams have not been participating in the BRU league due to various factors. He said Lions are based in Gantsi, which makes it difficult for them to travel frequently for fixtures, while Whales did not meet BRU requirements.

To participate in the league, clubs must have a coach and at least six front row players. Whales currently do not have a coach. Paxinos said they have decided to organise a friendly match for Whales against a league team to gauge if they are strong enough to compete. Unlike Whales, Lions meet all the BRU requirements to participate in the league. "The only problem is the team's commitment to the league as it consists of professional hunters," said Paxinos. The hunting season normally starts in April and Paxinos fears the club might not raise a team to honour fixtures.
