We're ready for regional challenge - Lees

Fresh from participating in a Sevens friendly tournament in South Africa, Botswana women's rugby coach, Shaun Lees, has declared that his charges are ready for the CAR South/East Africa challenge which Botswana hosts next weekend.

The Botswana side finished fourth out of eight teams at the tournament held in Middleburg last the weekend. Lees said their participation in the tournament was not about winning, but getting much needed match fitness. The team has been training since early this year, but has only played against international opposition twice. Lees said his wish was to have played one more friendly match before the CAR competition, but lack of funds has made it impossible.

He however said he had been able to gauge his charges' match fitness and endurance from the recent tournament where they played in five games. "I can confidently say that I am satisfied with where we stand," he said. He said the Middleburg tournament proved his players' ability to play in more than one position. Lees said his charges are comfortable with the new set-up. He said rookies Poloko Morwalela, Claire Davies and Lila Pavey also got a chance to shine at the tournament. He said the three performed well and showed great promise. "All we are left with is the finishing touches," he said. The final squad will be named early next week.
