Tshosane fails to convince despite bright start

Like the proverbial monkey on the back, Zebras' coach, Stanley Tshosane will find it difficult to ward-off his detractors after his charges laboured to a 1-0 victory over Chad last Friday, argues Staff Writer, MQONDISI DUBE

Despite a bright start to the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign, Zebras' coach, Stanley Tshosane has not silenced critics. After chalking two straight wins, including a famous victory over continental powerhouse, Tunisia, the former Zebras number two has been chided for his tactics. The Zebras sit pretty at the top with six points, four ahead of nearest opponents, Togo, but still detractors are not pacified especially after the unimpressive 1-0 win over Chad at the UB Stadium last Friday.

The Chadians were physically imposing, but shared sentiment is that they could have been beaten by a wider margin. Chad, with a bit of luck, could have gone home with a point after what looked like a genuine goal was ruled out for offside in the second half. The Zebras started at a pedestrian pace in the first half with no real urgency. There was no penetration from the wings where the speedsters Phenyo 'Mzambia' Mongala and Joel '16V' Mogorosi were operating. The two did not use their pace and skill to great effect in the opening half. One would have expected the speedy wingers to take on the Chadian defence at a high pace.
