Stanbic Bank Botswana has come up with an initiative to help national football team players to manage their finances and to reap benefits when they retire.

The plan was announced to the team at a personal financial management forum at the Lekidi Football Centre this week. It involves free financial advice and savings accounts for the players. Stanbic Bank promised to put P100 each month in the players' bank accounts while allowing them to add more money if they want in a service that accumulates interest every 12 months.

Speaking at the forum, Stanbic Bank market risk manager, Joel Ramaphoi said they came up with the initiative in appreciation of the national teams' historic qualification for the 2012 Africa Cup Of Nations (AFCON). He said the intention is to catch players while they are still actively involved in the national team, as research has proved that many of them struggle financially after retirement. He said that most players are at a risk of making poor financial management decisions especially at the height of their carriers when they have sustainable incomes.
