Panthers maul hapless UB Relics

Debutants Panthers proved they have what it takes to win the Botswana Basketball Association (BBA) Women's League when they thrashed University of Botswana (UB) Relics 78-28 on their home ground on Friday.

Relics were, however, the first to open the scoring through their forward Motshidisi Ramoshebi. It was not long after that when Panthers' guard Lebole Koontse failed to score four rebounds, leaving the youth-dominated team in the lead. Relics were in top form for most of the quarter, but Panthers star player Poloko Chiepe spoiled their party when she scored two rebounds she was awarded to put both teams at par with two goals each. Chiepe was also the topscorer, netting 26 baskets throughout the game. Both sides lacked what it takes to obtain maximum points as they missed crucial goals. Panthers, who have more players who have tasted the league before, started showing their experience when they stepped up the game in the last three minutes of the first quarter. By the end of the first quarter, Panthers led by 11 baskets to seven, thanks to Chiepe who scored eight baskets.

The second quarter was intense with Panthers starting off on a high note but again it was Relics who registered the first basket of the round. The youngsters showed a lot of fighting spirit, dominating most of the quarter but they were unfortunately disadvantaged by the fact that unlike Panthers they do not have a star shooter.
