New sports law in the offing

The government plans to reform the law to improve sports governance in the country, Parliament was told on Tuesday.

The Minister of Youth, Sport and Culture, Shaw Kgathi said the cabinet has endorsed his request to draft a new sports bill to enhance sports governance. He told MPs on Tuesday that three bodies, the Botswana National Sports Council (BNSC), the Department of Sport and Recreation (DSR) and the Botswana National Olympic Council (BNOC) currently govern sports in the country.

"Sport governance in Botswana is thus a mixture of overlapping responsibilities and duplication of effort in the execution of those responsibilities. He said it is not in sync with the global trends where sports governance is increasingly coming under the umbrella of one body.
