Lack of sponsorship is the biggest problem facing the local basketball league, says newly appointed Botswana Basketball Association (BBA) chairman, William Nyangu.

Speaking to Mmegi Sport, Nyangu said as a result local basketball has stagnated while worldwide it is considered a fast growing sport.

He said that locally, anyone participating in basketball activities does so for the love of the sport. "Starting from the players up to the officials, no one is getting reimbursed for their hard work and time dedicated to the sport," he said.  Nyangu however said that despite lack of cash incentives people continue showing commitment to the sport. He urged prospective sponsors to support the sport as many youth identify with the sport. "It would also be easier to sponsor basketball as it is an established sport locally, all that is needed is finance to ensure its improvement," he said.
