The Ministry of Infrastructure, Science and Technology (MIST) will today hand over the National Stadium to the Ministry of Youth, Sport and Culture (MYSC). The handover was deferred last week as some senior government officials were absent.

Infrastructure, Science and Technology Minister, Johnnie Swartz will hand over the facility to Shaw Kgathi. On Saturday, the stadium will host its first match in over five years when the Zebras play Uganda on Saturday.According to the Botswana National Sports Council (BNSC) acting CEO, Thato Kgosimore, the officially opening will only be done on September 30th when Zebras face Malawi as part of the Independence Day celebrations.

Premier League teams will use the venue in the 2013/2014 season. Batswana have impatiently waited for the re-opening of the stadium after it was closed for renovations in 2008. The closure came at a huge cost particularly for football fans who had to travel to places like Molepolole and Lobatse to watch matches. Many other activities that are normally held in Gaborone also had to be moved outside the capital.
