Nashua Botswana will sponsor this year's Independence Cup golf competition after Standard Chartered Bank pulled out.

The commercial bank has been sponsoring the annual event but stopped citing the global economic downturn. The Botswana Golf Union (BGU) unveiled the new sponsor at a media briefing at the Gaborone Golf Club (GGC) on Wednesday. Nashua Botswana has donated P50,000 to sponsor the two-day competition. The tournament tees-off tomorrow with 240 players taking part. Players will be drawn from nine clubs namely Francistown, Selebi-Phikwe, Palapye, Kasane, Phakalane, Gaborone, Sowa, Orapa, and Jwaneng.

BGU president, Dr Andrew Hall said their aim is to make golf accessible to all Batswana. He said the reason they have included women and youth categories in the league is to ensure the growth of the sport. "At the moment, many people, not only in Botswana have got the perception that golf is a sport for old, retired, rich men, which is not true.
