Mancini refuses to rule out signing Rooney

Roberto Mancini yesterday insisted that he's had no official contact regarding a move for Wayne Rooney but refused to rule out signing the Manchester United striker, who was due to make a statement later Wednesday.

The Manchester City manager refused to be drawn on details relating to Rooney but admitted that: "In the summer if there is a player who can change things for us we'll talk about it ... City are developing every month, every year. The people here have big ambitions."

Sir Alex Ferguson confirmed yesterday the England striker would not sign a new contract at Old Trafford and many see Eastlands as the most likely destination, despite which, Mancini still emphasised his belief that Rooney would remain at United: "Rooney is a great player but I think he'll stay at United," he said. "He's a good player, he's an important player for United."
