Lees forced to eat humble pie

The Lady Vultures coach, Shaun Lees was forced to eat humble pie last weekend when the rugby side failed to reach its top four target during the Confederation of African Rugby (CAR) South/East Sevens tournament.

A top four finish would have seen Botswana proceed to the 2012 Africa Sevens Championship that act as a qualifier for the 2013 World Cup.However, Botswana dismally failed and finished behind South Africa, Kenya, Zambia, Madagascar and Uganda. Botswana won a single game against an amateur Rwanda side, which saved them the humiliation of anchoring the log. This was despite confident promises from Lees in the build-up to the tournament. Looking at the team's poor performance, it was almost impossible to believe that the very side had been training all year in preparation for the tournament. They made avoidable mistakes and scoring seemed to be their biggest challenge.

Lees has however accepted that he failed the nation, but said that from a coach's perspective, Lady Vultures' performance was not bad. He said that even coaches from powerhouses such as South Africa applauded Botswana's improvement. "Most of them said that the team was a different outfit from 2008 when they started playing and with continued mentorship they could become a strong side," he said.
