The 14th annual Kofukan Open Championship held at the University of Botswana's (UB) Student Hall on Saturday has been declared a success. Botswana Karate Association (BOKA) technical board chairman, Million Masumbika said the tournament was attended by over 450 participants from different styles like Shukokai, Botswana Shito Ryo Mabuni, Hayashi Ha and Shotokan JKA.

Masumbika pointed out that he was more than happy about the turnout. "We did not expect such a large attendance mainly because of finances. Some schools unfortunately because of that reason could not make it to the tournament, but we hope that next year, they will be able to participate," he said. Masumbika added that such tournaments are necessary and good for children because they are like an outing for them. He said that at such gatherings, children get to know each other regardless of their karate styles. They also learn a lot from each other. "This is very clear because even in competitions, when somebody performs well regardless of their style, others cheer them on." Masumbika said that although getting a sponsor is difficult, they will not give up.

Twelve-year-old Khaya Groth who won a bronze medal after performing 'Anan' and 'Sienchin' Kata's said that the tournament was good and taught him a lot of things. "The tournament has made me realise that you do not always win and that losing should not discourage you from performing better next time," he said.
