Khama to miss World Cup opening ceremony

President Ian Khama Seretse Khama, an avid sports fan, will not join other heads of state at the official opening of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa on June 11 as he will be away in Cuba, his spokesperson, Sipho Madisa has said.

Madisa told Mmegi Sport that the President leaves for Havana, the Cuban capital, on June 4 and returns on June 13.

"The President has been invited (to the opening match), the letter came through. However, due to his state visit to Cuba, he won't be able to attend the official opening but will endeavour to attend the closing ceremony," Madisa said. Khama is among 43 heads of state invited to the official opening ceremony at the re-built 95,000-seater Soccer City Stadium in Johannesburg next Friday.
