Golfers return empty-handed

The national golf team returned from the Zone VI competition in Ndola, Zambia, empty-handed after finishing eighth in the 12-nation regional event.

The team finished in a similar position in the last competition. Team manager, Bakani Kelebantse told Mmegi Sport that their performance was affected by problems they encountered before the tournament started. He said that they spent much time in South Africa after they learnt that their flight was not paid for. Their luggage was left behind, forcing them to play the first warm-up tournament, the Zambian Open, with borrowed clubs from the hosts. They got their clubs on the second day.

Kelebantse said the Botswana golfers were tense while competition in the tournament has improved. He is encouraged that the golfers' losing margins were not big. "Considering the close gap we lost with, it shows that several countries have improved and the Botswana Golf Union (BGU) has to do a lot if we are to win this important competition," he said.
