MOCHUDI: Letlapeng goalkeeper April Phale made two saves during penalty-shootouts to help his side to a 3-2 victory over XI Brothers in the Coca-Cola Cup preliminary round double-header played at the Buffaloes Ground on Saturday.

After both sides were locked to a 1-1 draw inside 90 minutes, penalties had to decide which side reaches the next stage. But it was Letlapeng goalkeeper who brought smiles to their vociferous supporters when he denied XI Brothers' Keokame Rantlhapi and captain Kealeboga Basiamisi. XI Brothers' striker Kgopolo Kgotleng missed much to the delight of the travelling Ramotswa supporters who booed each and every XI Brothers' player who went to take a spot kick. As for Letlapeng, Keletso Harry's shot was saved by goalkeeper Keolopile Baipidi and Ompelege Mothei's effort rattled the upright. Those who ensured that Letlapeng proceeded to the next round were Patrick Magosi, Pane Rakhobo and Lenyatso Diseko.
In an interview with the Monitor Sport after the game, Phale said, "I'm happy to have helped my team into the next round. I was just relaxed because I got some tips from my coach (Steven Sebekiri)." Sebekiri is a former Mokgosi Young Fighters goalkeeper and was influential when his side reached the Coca-Cola Cup in 1997, when they lost 2-0 to Notwane.  XI Brothers' coach Nelson Olebile told Monitor Sport that they created a lot of chances which all went to waste. He said that unlike their opponents, they were not patient when in possession, hence they lost.
Letlapeng drew blood first towards the end of the first half through Lenyatso Modisane. After the break, XI Brothers led by Goitsimosi Gontse pushed forward in numbers in a bid to level matters, but were let down by indecision. At times, XI Brothers' efforts were frustrated by the rock solid Letlapeng defence led by Oaitse Tsie. XI Brothers kept on pushing forward and were rewarded in the 90th minute when captain Basiamisi slotted home after Letlapeng rearguard went to sleep. But credit has to go to XI Brothers' midfielder Hope Fresh who played a big part in the equaliser.
In the second game, Mochudi Rovers narrowly beat Eastern Tigers 1-0 in a local derby. Rovers scored the winner in the 26th minute when Tebogo Ntwaagae scored with a beautiful header from a well-taken cross from youngster Kagiso Nkepe. But credit has to go to Rovers' goalkeeper Mosimanegape Thari who pulled some breathtaking saves throughout the game to ensure that his side reaches the next stage. Though they did not score, Tigers performed well but lack of composure infront of goal cost them.
Rovers' player/coach Oliver Ramaabya told Monitor Sport that after they realised that the league was out of their reach, they turned their focus to the Coca-Cola Cup. He said the other advantage was that they knew what to expect from to Tigers having faced them in the league.

Micro-procurement maze demands urgent reform

Whilst celebrating milestones in inclusivity, with notably P5 billion awarded to vulnerable groups, the report sounds a 'siren' on a dangerous and growing trend: the ballooning use of micro-procurement. That this method, designed for small-scale, efficient purchases, now accounts for a staggering 25% (P8 billion) of total procurement value is not a sign of agility, but a 'red flag'. The PPRA’s warning is unequivocal and must be...
