FRANCISTOWN: The sending off ceremony of team Francistown athletes to the Botswana Games on Tuesday did not take place.

The ceremony was supposed to have been hosted by the Francistown City Council at the civic centre on Tuesday afternoon. However, the athletes and the mayor did not turn up.

Francistown will host the Botswana Games from December 5.

Francistown City Council senior public relations officer, Joseph Wasubera said unforeseen circumstances forced the postponement of the event. He said organisers of the event had been meeting every week with all stakeholders to prepare for the sending off ceremony. It would appear that systems that should have been in place were not ready for the event.

“We have since communicated with our stakeholders and informed people in other logistics of the postponement,” Wasubera said. “Therefore our athletes were also informed not to turn up.”
