EIA delays F/town stadium

FRANCISTOWN: The construction of the proposed Francistown integrated sports facility may be delayed again due to the newly introduced Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) process. During a poorly attended EIA consultative meeting held at the Civic Centre yesterday, a socio-economic planner from EHES (PTY) Ltd said they are still at an early stage of the assessment.

Stakeholders in the proposed 27,000-seater facility and local councillors attended the meeting meant to solicit ideas and concerns about the project. EHES representative, Tshoganetso Tiroyamodimo said after they finish their assessment, they would design terms of reference to be submitted to the department of environmental affairs. She explained that tendering could be done only after EHES has given the go-ahead.

She said there are possibilities the project would continue in the designated area or it might relocate. "If we find that there is serious adverse impact on the environment, there is a possibility that it might move," she asserted. Relocation would mean new plans. Though she said they have 12 weeks to complete the assessment, she indicated that further consultations are to be made with the airport authorities and the department of physical planning.
