Cricket training sessions for juniors enter final leg

The girls' Under-19 and Under-13 cricket teams enter the last leg of their training session this week ahead of the Four Nations cricket tournament expected to kick off on Friday. Participating countries are Swaziland, Mozambique, Namibia and hosts Botswana.

The Under-19 side will compete in a 35-over round robin tournament while the Under-13 team face their Namibian counterparts in three 20-over games.  Botswana Cricket Association (BCA) chief executive officer (CEO) Girish Ramakrishna said the the main area they would focus on is endurance while also preparing the team psychologically. "The Under-19's are under pressure to do well as they will be closely watched by the International Cricket Council (ICC) who have promised to consider them for the Under-19 World Cup qualifiers if they perform well," he said. The World Cup qualifiers are scheduled for October.

Ramakrishna said that during the tournament the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) would make an HIV/AIDS presentation to all the participating teams, while the Botswana National Sports Council (BNSC) is expected to talk against the use of performance enhancing substances. He said their objective is to blend health issues with cricket. He said that sports is not only about good performance but about keeping a healthy body.
