Cricket body introduces regional schools tournament

As part of meeting the demands of the fast growing primary schools cricket development programme, the Botswana Cricket Association (BCA) has introduced regional tournaments to help monitor progress. To date the BCA programme has 6,776 children from 128 schools throughout the country.

BCA chief executive officer (CEO) Girish Ramakrishna said the pioneer regional tournament kicked off in Ramotswa on Monday. The T20 tournament has four participating primary schools in Mogopane, Ketshwerebothata, St Bernard's and Mojadife. The pilot project is expected to run until September 21.

Ramakrishna said the tournament is different as they are using soft balls instead of the usual hard balls. He said this is because they are using a temporary cricket field known as a flick-pitch that cannot support the hard balls. He said the flick pitch would be used for most of the tournaments because of the unavailability of playing fields. He said soft ball cricket has been played in several countries that have a challenge of playing fields. "However, the children would eventually get to use the normal balls," he said.
