Cash crisis paralyses basketball teams

Both the men's and women's senior national basketball teams that have seen no action this year will continue to be inactive due to lack of funds, the Botswana Basketball Association (BBA) has revealed. The last time the men's team was active was towards the end of last year whilst the women's team has been dormant for two years.

Speaking to Mmegi Sport, BBA technical director, Mothusi Thipe, said that this year the budget they were allocated was not enough to accommodate the senior teams since the Under-16 and Under-17 teams had a busy year. The Under-16 participated in a tournament in Zambia early this year whilst the Under-17 have been busy in camp.

Thipe said their development programme that is intensifying is also depleting their funds. He said in the next few days the BBA would conduct development programmes for children between the ages of 12 and 18 at Masunga, Francistown and Serowe. "So far we have done Sehithwa and Maun. Ghanzi and Lobatse are the last two locations for the year," he said.
