BTA holds training camp for juniors

About 60 junior tennis players are camping in Gaborone to be introduced to technical aspects of the game. The players from primary schools are in camp at the Botswana Tennis Association (BTA) centre.

The week-long camp started yesterday and ends on Sunday. BTA's sports development officer, Mthandazo Sibanda, said that the players were selected last December during the Botswana National Sports Council's (BNSC) junior development programme. He explained that the camp is a follow-up programme to improve players at grassroots level.
He pointed out that they have introduced tennis in places like Jwaneng, Gabane, Molepolole, Selebi-Phikwe and Masunga.

The "For the kids to benefit in this sport we have to introduce them while they are still young," said Sibanda who is the camp coordinator. He explained that they are determined to spread the game to villages and reach many places in the country. He said there is need to establish clubs at grassroots level so that BTA gets variety when it comes to selecting national teams.
