BRU denies racism charges

Botswana Rugby Union (BRU) officials have denied allegations of racism in the sport. BRU director Andrew Paxinos said the union has not handled any cases of racism this year as all teams were warned against the practice. Paxinos said the club coaches were given rules and regulations that govern the sport at the beginning of the year.

"Racism in rugby is totally unacceptable," he said. "If by any chance there have been any incidents, then none has been reported to us. Racial slurs against other players regardless of whether they are your teammates is punishable by suspension or in extreme cases the offender will be banned from playing rugby for life," he said.

Gaborone Hogs' player, Vuyisile Moyo, confirmed that there were racist remarks from supporters but not the players. Moyo argued that some supporters come with the motive of hurting or discouraging players from opposing teams and they end up doing so through racial slurs. He however said it is difficult to prevent supporters from doing so. "It is up to us as the players to be disciplined and ignore rowdy supporters because reacting will not help," he said.
