Boxers clash in inter-club tourney

The Botswana Boxing Association (BoBA), will host their penultimate inter-club boxing tournament for 2011 at the Francistown Botswana Defence Force (BDF) Donga camp tomorrow.

The inter-club tournament is a qualifier for the National Boxing Championships. BoBA spokesperson, Willoughby Kemoen, told Mmegi Sport that some boxers have already qualified for the national championships. He however, said the exact number of athletes who would participate at the championships would not be known until the last inter-club tournament, scheduled for Kang on October 22. He revealed that boxers who have qualified would be allowed to participate in the last two inter-club tournaments. But he said they risk injuries or losing their places if they do not perform well in the last two events.

The National Boxing Championship preliminaries, quarter and semi-finals are scheduled for Mahalapye on November 12-13. The finals will take place in Gaborone on November 19. Kemoen said they expect to find a sponsor for this year's championships. He said the national finals would determine boxers who will participate at Botswana's premier boxing tournament, the Best Of The Best, where only the champions meet. The Best Of The Best takes place on December 3.  "After the Best Of The Best, BoBA will hold an ordinary general meeting where one of the tasks will be to draw up the 2012 calendar," he said.
