Hosts Botswana have intensified preparations with 56 days to go before the Gaborone 2014 African Youth Games. Team Botswana chef de mission, Tshepo Sitale said yesterday that besides scaling up preparations, some of the 204 athletes from 20 disciplines have been participating in competitions to gauge their strength.

He said things are looking good for  popular and non-conventional sports and athletes have shown in various competitions that they are well drilled. He said karate, boxing, tennis, athletics, table tennis, netball, judo, swimming and volleyball have done exceptionally well at regional competitions in South Africa, Zambia and Cameroon. Part of the athletics team is on camp at Goodhope Senior Secondary School to allow students to train after classes as a way of ensuring synergy in academic and sports performances.

“When staging games of this magnitude, there is no doubt that the focus is on our team to showcase our talent to its maximum best, and our nation to rally behind the team to ensure holistic participation as a nation. These games are a trial of our patriotism,” Sitale said.
