BOKA gives Ryshin-Kan a hearing

The Botswana Karate Association (BOKA) will call a general meeting in September where the endorsement of the new karate style, Ryshin-Kan will be on the agenda.

The August meeting was rescheduled because some BOKA members will be travelling outside the country. Ryshin Kan was established last year by one of the country's national karatekas, Andrew Dobolo. His hopes of having it endorsed as a BOKA member were dashed at the association's annual general meeting early this year. BOKA had accepted Ryshin-Kan but the general assembly rejected it, questioning the capability of Dobolo as its leader as he had just retired as an athlete. BOKA spokesperson, Moses Moloi, said they would throw the issue to the members again to see if they have had a change of mind. Moloi still maintains that having Ryshin-Kan was not an oversight on the part of the executive committee as they were certain that the style had met the necessary requirements for registration. Despite having staged successful tournaments, the meeting believed that Dobolo should be assessed before he is welcomed into the karate family. Moloi said they do not have the power to set aside the decision taken by the assembly as the buck stops with them.

Moloi said until such time as their members agree that the style is endorsed there is nothing that the executive committee can do. The Dobolo style was rejected in an emotionally charged meeting where he accused some people in the executive of influencing members to reject his style. Dobolo declined to discuss the contents of the meeting. BOKA has in the past complained that Dobolo places too much reliance on complaining in the media overstepping the authority of the affiliates.
