Blow for Southern Africa as Angola bow out

Chances of a Southern African country landing only the second Africa Cup of Nations trophy dimmed further on Sunday when hosts, Angola crashed out of the competition after losing 1-0 to four time champions, Ghana in the quarters.

With the exit of the Palancas Negras, the region's only representative remained two-time losing finalists, Zambia which faced Nigeria last night. Elimination of Chipolopolo by the Super Eagles would mean Southern Africa will have to wait for another two years to have a shot at the crown that has been the preserve of North and West Africa.

South Africa remains the only team from the COSAFA region to win the biennial tournament in 1996 when they were roped in belatedly as hosts. This year's hosts Angola were tipped to land their first African title but the loss to the Black Stars in the quarters has dashed their hopes.
