BCA hails Under-17 cricket tournament

The Botswana Cricket Association (BCA) has said the inaugural Under-17 tournament, which ended on Saturday, has helped them identify players for the junior national teams.

Over 100 players took part in the league with 95 percent players being citizens. BCA fixtures and publicity secretary Sumod Damodar said players as young as 13 participated in the tournament, which would make it possible for them to pick national teams for all junior teams.

Damodar said the league was also meant to grow the girls' game as all teams had female players, apart from Combined Northern Districts (CND) Mokwepa and Mogobane Nkwe. Gaborone was represented by South Gaborone (SG) Tau and league runners-up Central Gaborone (CG) Tshukudu. Damodar said Gaborone had two teams because of its large pool of players. Combined Southern Districts (CSD) Kwena had players from the South, while league champions CND Mokwepa consisted of players from Francistown and surrounding areas. Damodar said ther objective is to develop interest and dedication among the children. "The more they play the more they stand a chance of performing better internationally," he said.
