The Minister of Education and Skills Development (MoESD) Pelonomi Venson-Moitoi left for Israel yesterday to discuss and sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

The MoU that will be signed by Venson-Moitoi and the Israeli minister of education will facilitate, encourage, promote and develop cooperation in the field of education. Communication from the MoESD public relations officer, Oarabile Phefo says the two ministers intend to expand their contacts, cooperation and exchange of visits between pre-primary, primary, secondary and University lectures as well as researchers and senior management personnel. The two countries will also exchange school curricula, pedagogical and methodological literature and other materials concerning the education system after the MoU signing.  "The MoU will encourage participation in educational congresses, conferences, seminars and symposia hosted by either state," Phefo said.

Botswana has a school life expectancy of 12 years, while according to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), Israel had 14.6 years and ranked 22nd in the world, 22 percent more that Botswana for the years 1998/99 and 1999/2000.  School life expectancy is defined as the time taken and transition from primary to secondary schooling.  A joint Botswana-Israel committee will be established to facilitate the implementation of the MoU.  Minister Venson-Moitoi is expected back home next week Saturday.
