Zone Four helps wheelchair bound Lekalake

The Zone Four Club of Gaborone has donated P1,170 to wheelchair bound Lillian Lekalake, who suffers from cerebral palsy. The plight of Lekalake was made public nearly two months ago by The Monitor.

Since then, the Rotary Club of Francistown has given her a wheelchair while Zone Four Club is the latest donor to respond to her needs. Lekalake was diagnosed with the disease when she was a year old. The disease affects body movements and muscle coordination. It is caused by damage to single or more specific areas of the brain.

Mostly, these damages occur during foetal development or infancy. Lekalake cannot do anything voluntarily and this means her mother has had a tough time caring for her because she needs 24-hour attention. When making the donation, Nonofo Leepile of Zone Four explained that they looked for a school that could admit Lekalake and enquired about what was needed to allow her to attend classes. They were told that it will take only P650 per year for Lekalake to attend school, a price they felt was reasonably to give a child in need a reason to smile.  "That is when we decided to spare some few bucks to fulfill our first ever social responsibility as the club and do what we can," Leepile said.
