Zim coalition calls for SADC monitors

A zimbabwean non- governmental organisation(NGO), Crisis in Zimbabwe coalition, has called for the deployment of SADC monitors in Zimbabwe to assess and ensure full implementation of the Global Political Agereement (GPA) before holding elections.

President Robert Mugabe's ZANU-PF and Morgan Tsvangirai's `Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) have agreed that elections be held next year. Addressing a press conference in Gaborone yesterday, the NGO's spokesman Phillip Passrayi disclosed that they met WITH Southern African Development Community (SADC) Executive Secretary Dr Tomaz Salomao on Monday in Gaborone and told him that SADC has a role to find a lasting solution to Zimbabwe's political conflict and should clarify the regional body's position on elections and the lifespan of the unity government, as its guarantors. At the meeting, the Crisis in Zimbabwe Coalition also called on SADC to ensure the restoration of political stability, peace and human rights to pave the way for credible elections.

The coalition also wants SADC monitors to urge Zimbabwean political parties to create a conducive environment for the holding of  "democratic elections that are free from violence and intimidation and where the people of Zimbabwe can genuinely and freely express their will".
