Youth decry opposition's lack of seriousness

Participants at the recent Independent Electoral Commission's (IEC) youth workshop expressed concern at lack of seriousness especially portrayed by opposition parties.

In an interview, they said while youth voter apathy is rife, it is a double blow to see young politicians leading in defections this year. One Ronald Antonio, said most young people look up to political figures they identify with and the fact that the youth are leading the 'political confusion' has the potential of exacerbating voter apathy.  He said the other worrying trend is floor-crossing because the practice in Botswana is that candidates are voted on the basis of party policies, with little or no consideration at all for individual profiles.

"This will make people especially the youth lose hope in participating in the election process because those elected into political office simply don't take the voice of the masses into consideration," Antonio said.
He added that the fact that opposition politics is destabilised while the country is left with a year to the next general election is sad.
