Why BDP negotiation efforts crumbled

Since the controversial suspension of Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) Secretary General Gomolemo Motswaledi, by President Ian Khama, there have been reports that former Presidents Ketumile Masire and Festus Mogae, have been leading a team that was attempting to bring peace between the two men.

The details of the negotiations have been sketchy, but what is obvious is that the task was an arduous one for the two party veterans, meeting Khama more than three times in the space of a week. First meeting him at his office then going on motor magnate Satar Dada's plane to President Khama's vacation home in Mosu. The former President were to fly again to Mosu on Tuesday but while at the VIP lounge at the Airport they were informed that Khama would only see them on Thursday.

The talks were on, and then off, and then on and then off again, while journalists hovered around as the drama unfolded, thirsty for details. And then yesterday afternoon, the talks were reported to be off for good. The reports were confirmed when a statement ostensibly authored by party leaders who were mediating issued a press release.
