We have interest in politics - BFTU

FRANCISTOWN: The secretary general of Botswana Federation of Trade Unions (BFTU) Gadzani Mhotsha has said party politics will not derail the union from its core mandate of fighting for workers’ rights.

Speaking at BFTU’s 13th Tri-Annual Delegates Congress at Adansonia Hotel, he debunked notions that the labour movement has no business in politics. He said that BFTU has a stake in politics because political decisions affect the union just like any member of society.

“Don’t be fooled by people who say trade unions are apolitical. Politicians make laws and policies that affect us. So we must know who is going to parliament or council. We have a role to play in politics even though we have not endorsed any political party in the country,” he said.
