Teacher unions have come out in defence of their profession in the wake of the recent rape of a student while sleeping in an unlocked classroom during a school trip.

Indications are that the authorities are likely to take action against the teacher who chaperoned the students, but other teachers argue that the teacher is not to blame.  They argue that the 2008 Public Service Act positioned them as public servants who should sleep in hotels during official trips. A source at the ministry has told this publication that the incident where the girl was raped at Montsamaisa JSS recently is not an isolated incident.  “A lot has been happening over the years.  There have been incidents of rape, fights, theft and many other delinquencies of which some went unreported,” he said.

The source who is a former teacher said he used to sleep in classrooms at his own will with most ditching classrooms owing not only because of the discomfort, but also security. For his part, Botswana Sector of Educators Trade Union (BOSETU) secretary general, Tobokani Rari said they were not expecting any action to be taken against the teacher who had gone with the students on the trip.
