SELEBI-PHIKWE: Members of Ward Development Committees (WDC'S) have called for the Selebi-Phikwe Economic Diversification Unit (SPEDU) to be dismantled because it has not benefited the community since its inception.

With Assistant Minister of Local Government, Botlhogile Tshireletso, in attendance, secretary for the umbrella WDC, Sylvester Masweu, said SPEDU should tell residents of Selebi-Phikwe what they have achieved since they set up.  He complained that SPEDU is carrying out projects for the people without consulting them. He noted that the recent backyard gardening project that was launched over the weekend in Selebi-Phikwe is going to impoverish people more.

"The backyard gardening project cannot alleviate poverty because it is hard to sustain. The beneficiaries will not be able to continue with it because it has many challenges.  "Most of them will have their water connection cut because water bills will escalate. SPEDU must come up with better plans to improve the lives of people of this region," he said.
