Venson-Moitoi rejects allowance review motion

The Member of Parliament for Okavango Bagalatia Arone has called for a review of tertiary students' living allowances. In a motion brought before Parliament on Friday, Arone said the current student allowance is way below the cost of living.

At P1,420 the allowance does not allow tertiary students, many of whom live in the city, to meet their rental, transport and grocery obligations, Arone said.  He argued that rental costs in cities, where tertiary institutions are mostly based, have gone up, as have transport costs and the price of basic food items.

The Okavango MP said due to the inability of students meeting all their obligations, some have resorted to prostitution to make ends meet, while others engage in transactional sex with multiple partners. "This has pushed some students into engaging in unbecoming behaviour.  Young women have now joined the highway street at night to try and meet their rentals and other costs," he said.
