The Bureau of Diplomatic Security at the US Embassy in Botswana has alerted Americans living in Botswana about escalating gun crimes and offered safety precautions.

In a press statement issued on Saturday, the embassy expressed deep concern at three armed robberies that occurred at Lansmore Hotel, Cresta Lodge and Travel Lodge. The embassy stated that all the crimes were committed at gunpoint in the early hours of the morning and the robbers focused solely on the hotels' front desk staff. Although there were no reports of guests being robbed or harmed in the episodes, police are investigating what appears to be the work of one syndicate, the statement claims.

"This security message is a reminder that no establishment is immune to crime, and even businesses that take appropriate precautions can be targeted. In the recent past, local Gaborone restaurants have also been robbed using similar tactics," reads the communique. The embassy has encouraged its citizens to register with the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program, which will keep them up to date with important safety and security announcements as well as assist them to get in touch with family and friends in an emergency situation.
