Union accuses Cresta of contravening strike rules

Botswana Hotel and Tourism Workers Union has accused the Cresta Marakanelo management of contravening rules on industrial action, by hiring about 20 casual labourers to replace staff on strike.

The union's national chairman Mpho Moloi said their investigations have revealed that managers were busy on Monday night hiring casual labourers in Kasane, Palapye, Francistown and others areas where Cresta employees are on strike.

"I think of all the eight hotels they own in Botswana, it is only here in Gaborone that they did not engage casual labourers. They realised that as most of the union executive committee members are here, we will find out right away. What they are doing is against a dispute situation. They also know that it is wrong for them to be engaging casual labourers to stand in for employees on strike," he said.
