Unemployment worst among secondary school graduates

Though the national unemployment rate went down from 19.9 percent in 2001 to 17.9 percent in 2009/10, Statistics Botswana reports an approximately 4.5 percent increase of unemployment among secondary school graduates.

The Vision 2016 and Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) indicators report published last month states that unemployment in this group rose from 19.9 percent in 2001 to 24.3 percent in 2010. The rate was highest in 2006 at 35.0 percent before it fell to 24.3 percent in 2010.

In 2001 unemployment among university graduates was 3.2 percent, but drastically rose to 17.5 percent in 2003, falling to 5.9 percent in 2010. The report does not provide statistics for the period 2011/12/13. On the other hand unemployment amongst vocational graduates was at 13.4 percent in 2003, 18.4 percent in 2003, 17.1 in 2006 and 11.3 in 2010. Likewise, the report does not contain statistics for the past two years.
