Uneasy calm hangs over Kgatleng

Tribal leaders from all of corners of the Bakgatla District are meeting this morning at the Mochudi Main Kgotla to chart the way forward following government's announcement that it has de-recognised their Kgosikgolo Kgafela Kgafela.

The meeting will be followed next week Saturday by a pitso for the whole morafe at which Kgafela will address his people on the way forward.

Since it announced Kgafela's de-recognition five days ago - through then Local Government Minister Lebonaamang Mokalake, government has remained quiet about the matter. The Bakgatla leadership has also not said much except that the derecognition was "a joke". However, an uncertain quietness has enveloped the Bakgatla capital of Mochudi and surrounding areas within Kgafela's jurisdiction.  The stillness belies a pervasive disquiet that hangs in the air in the area. It is apparent in conversations with the tribe and among little knots that have formed around the village. The feeling of most members of the tribe is summed up in Bakgatla Ba Kagafela Royal Trust Corporation Limited's heritage officer Ntikwe Motlotle's words.
