UDC Youth League to hold demonstrations

The newly-launched coalition of opposition parties, Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC) youth league yesterday announced its intention to hold a peaceful demonstration during the budget speech.

This follows several futile attempts to have the Minister of Finance and Development Kenneth Matambo and his Assistant Vincent Seretse suspended from office, pending investigation into their corruption cases. They also decried what they termed 'unprofessional' conduct shown by the Office of the President. The youth league reportedly wrote a letter requesting the suspension of Seretse and Matambo but their efforts hit a snag as the office did not respond. Speaking during a press conference held at their office, Botswana Movement for Democracy Youth League (BMDYL) president Phenyo Segokgo said they were not impressed with the OP's handling of the matter as they have written to them twice. Sekgokgo said they followed the correct channels and procedure and wrote a letter, dated November 21. He said when they did a follow up they were told the letter had not reached the office. Undeterred, they submitted another letter and were promised a response within five days.

"We were surprised when a week later the president's spokesperson Jeff Ramsay informed the media that Matambo and Seretse would remain in office as they are considered innocent until proven guilty. They never responded to our letter," said Segokgo. He further said they found it appropriate to take action by lobbying and organising a peaceful protest. "We have chosen the date that the budget speech will be delivered on as there will be international coverage, which can challenge the integrity of the two men," he explained. He added that from parliament buildings they will precede to Bontleng shops for a public rally where issues such as education and corruption will be discussed.
