Makhandlela won the race after garnering 580 votes ahead of councillor Godfrey Mbaiwa's 498. The Mayor of Sowa Town Allen Lekwapa received 230 votes against Kedireng Kepaletswe's 87 and Mompoloki Lewis' 48.

But Veronica Lesole's announcement of the results sparked instant protests. First up was Mbaiwa who stood up to say he did not accept the results because the election process was marred by irregularities, including missing membership cards.
