Police are investigating a head-on collision that occurred in Palapye on Saturday morning that left two people dead and one in critical condition.

The accident, which involved a Toyota RunX and Honda Fit, happened at around 6am near the village’s Jan Botswana. Palapye Police Station commander, Superintendent Koziba Phuluweni told The Monitor they established that the speeding Toyota RunX was attempting to overtake. However, the driver miscalculated the speed and distance of oncoming traffic, adding that the driver ended up hitting a Honda Fit that was heading in the opposite direction, he said. "The Toyota RunX driver, a 28-year-old man died on the spot whilst his passenger, a 24-year-old man escaped the accident with minor injuries. Another vehicle, a Honda Fit that was driven by a 62-year-old man, had three people on board," Phuluweni said.

"The driver and two minors were rushed to Palapye hospital following the accident. One of the minors, a six-year-old child later succumbed to the injuries whilst receiving medical assistance." Phuluweni added the Honda Fit driver is currently fighting for his life after sustaining serious head injuries since he from cracked skull. He said this is the first fatal accident in his policing area this year, pleading with drivers to observe road signs and drive at minimum speed, especially in the middle of the village. "It is a serious concern that we continue to record fatalities in the middle of the village where motorists are expected to drive at 60km/h. A collision in an area where motorists are expected to be driving at 60km/h shouldn't be fatal, this shows that the other driver was speeding and caused unnecessary deaths," he said.

At face value, Mabeo’s response, which seeks an apology and threat of a defamation suit, might seem severe to some. But we cannot ignore the context. The comment in question did not offer a policy critique or question a political decision.It...
